Sulfur recovery is the process of conversion of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to elemental sulfur. Hydrogen sulfide is a byproduct of processing natural gas and refining high-sulfur crude oils. The most common conversion method used is the Claus process.
The claus sulfur recovery unit (SRU) and tail gas treating unit (TGTU) require a set of process gas analyzers to ensure safe operation, high efficiency, and meet environmental regulations. Tail gas analysis of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a critical measurement used by every SRU. Feed gas analysis is also becoming more prevalent to mitigate hydrocarbon upsets and quantify acid gas contaminants.
With extensive experience in the sulfur recovery process, AIMS provides high-quality analytical solutions across the SRU and TGTU, delivering the measurements needed to ensure efficient sulfur recovery operations
SRU Analyzers:
Natural gas plays an important role in the world’s energy supply. Natural gas needs to meet specific standards in relation to heating value, hydrocarbon dew point, and concentration of contaminants. Contamination can significantly affect the quality of natural gas.
Contaminants of natural gas include water vapor, sulfur-based compounds, heavy hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide. These can affect gas quality, damage pipelines and equipment, and cause unplanned downtime.
With extensive experience and continuous product development with our manufacturers, AIMS provides a comprehensive portfolio of specialized solutions, utilizing very advanced technologies to provide vital analysis across the full range of natural gas processes. From drilling to gas processing and transmission to the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG), our process instrumentation ensures natural gas meets quality specifications and requirements for gas treating, processing, transmission, and end use as a fuel or feedstock.

Sulphur Experts
Sulphur Experts have developed numerous proprietary analytical techniques for assessing, troubleshooting and optimizing amine, dehydration, and sulphur units. Their commitment to producing accurate on-site analyses has permitted us to assemble an immense database of facility operations. Using the gas and liquids analyses, we determine the process performance and make recommendations for better operability, safety, reliability, and unit efficiency.
Oxygen Analyzer
The correct and safe start-up and shutdown of the SRU can be a challenging task. When we provide this as an on-site service to our clients, we use oxygen analyzers to monitor the process. The oxygen analyzers can also be used for measuring oxygen in the process gas downstream of a direct-fired reheater in the SRU or TGU for example. An improperly tuned reheater can allow free oxygen onto the catalyst, deactivating it over time.
FTIR
Our H2S in Liquid Sulphur Analyser is specifically designed for the measurement of H2S and H2Sx dissolved in liquid sulphur. This analyser is used extensively throughout the industry to establish the amount of total H2S in raw product sulphur and the effectiveness of sulphur degassing systems.
CEMS
Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) is the total equipment necessary for the determination of a gas or particulate matter concentration or emission rate using pollutant analyzer measurements and a conversion equation, graph, or computer program to produce results in units of the applicable emission limitation or standard.
CEMS are required under some of the EPA regulations for either continual compliance determinations or determination of exceedances of the standards. The individual subparts of the EPA rules specify the reference methods that are used to substantiate the accuracy and precision of the CEMS.
In collaboration with our renowned manufacturers, AIMS has provided CEMS systems to many different industries in the region.
PEMS
Predictive Emission Monitoring System (PEMS) is the total equipment necessary for the determination of a gas concentration or emission rate using process or control device operating parameter measurements and a conversion equation, a graph, or computer program to produce results in units of the applicable emission limitation or standard.
Software-based PEMS is used for continuous real-time monitoring of pollutants such as NOX, SO2, CO, HC or reference variables such as O2.
PEMS is an innovative and cost-effective approach to continuous monitoring of emission sources as an alternative to continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS).
Functionality: PEMS cannot measure emissions directly and instead uses an empirical model to predict emissions based on historical and real-time process data.
Together with our principal DURAG Data Systems AIMS has installed PEMS in ADNOC Gas Processing in UAE.
RATA
Relative Accuracy Test Audits (RATA) compares data from a facility’s Continuous Emissions Monitor System (CEMS) to a simultaneously collected reference method test data in order to assess the accuracy of the CEMS readings.
